On Generic Video Game Subtitles
Oh generic one-word subtitles, the instant acknowledgement of a crappy game or, at the very least, a brainless publisher. Don’t they know that games like Shooty McRad Dick: Rising and Generic Space Man: Resurrection crop up on release lists month in, month out?
Ah well, to immortalise these lovely vague exclamations of creative absence I’ve chucked some of the most pervasive ones on a lovely little graph to see which ones are the most frequently used and abused. Two rules: the word must be used on its own (although a prevailing ‘the’ is counted), and it must come after a colon or hyphen.
Other than that, it’s fair game, even if the game stinks to high heaven (Jaws Unleashed).
The full list of games is as follows:
Origins
Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Ball Z: Origins, Silent Hill: Origins, Spore: Origins.
Retribution
Dead to Rights: Retribution, Resistance: Retribution.
Awakening
AI Wars: The Awakening, Unreal II: The Awakening, Reincarnations: Awakening, Demon’s Tomb: The Awakening, Dominions 3: The Awakening, Defense Grid: The Awakening, Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening.
Reckoning
Hunter: The Reckoning, Dead to Rights: Reckoning, Quake II: The Reckoning (Mission Pack).
Unleashed
Jaws: Unleashed, Godzilla: Unleashed, The Sims: Unleashed, NFL Street 2: Unleashed.
Evolution
Turok: Evolution, EverQuest: Evolution, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, Far Cry: Instincts - Evolution, Alien Breed: Evolution - Episode 1, The King of Fighters: Evolution.
Vengeance
Batman: Vengeance, Tribes: Vengeance, Far Cry: Vengeance, Colony Wars: Vengeance, Alien Shooter: Vengeance, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, Police Quest 2: The Vengeance.
I also made a very special Venn diagram for the genuinely shocking mashup of generic meets dull, from one of the most highly respected games on this list. Dragon Ages: Origins - Awakening. Incredible.
Subtitles that didn’t make the list include Bloodlines, Conspiracy, Reloaded, Extraction, Discovery, Rising, Legacy and Revelation. And if you factor in peoples’ wraths, dudes’ awakenings and legends of places, things, people and magic runes - well, I wasn’t THAT bored.
